This announcement is part of a Special Section of On Board with Professional Psychology that focuses on the intersection of professional psychology and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Learn more about ABPP’s Artificial Intelligence Task Force.
Overview of the ABPP Artificial Intelligence Task Force
The ABPP Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force was formed in Summer 2024 and aims to work collaboratively as an interorganizational consortium encouraging connectivity and supporting specialists, fostering dialogue, and engaging ABPP as a thought partner in the evolving AI landscape. Our ABPP AI Task Force comprises a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from the ABPP Board of Trustees, interorganizational collaborators from external psychology organizations, ABPP Specialty Board members, subject matter experts on AI, and the ABPP Executive Officer. The goal of this Task Force has been to explore the intersection of AI and psychology and to share the learnings with our psychologist colleagues. We want to explore how AI may enhance practice, professional development, and organizational functioning as well as propose strategies to identify and prevent potential misuse of AI technologies.
Task Force Activities
The last many months have been productive, thanks to our hard-working members. A summary of our activities includes:
- Literature Review: The ABPP AI Task Force delved into existing AI literature relevant to psychology practice. To share the wealth, see our recommended reading list that serves as a helpful starting point for psychologists interested in learning about AI.
- Development of ABPP AI Task Force Subgroups: With recognition that AI is a large and expanding area, four different subgroups were developed to be of service to our specialists and more broadly, to our psychologist colleagues.
- Education Subgroup – This subgroup focuses on the best methods for imparting AI-related information to specialists.
- Ethics Subgroup – This subgroup examines ethical issues related to AI and coordinates with the Education Subgroup to provide content and determine the most effective way to disseminate information.
- ABPP Certification-Relevant Subgroup – This subgroup is mindful of AI’s relevance to the activities within ABPP.
- Outreach and Collaboration Subgroup – This subgroup aims to contact and connect with AI organizations outside of our ABPP perimeter. The goal is to collaborate with them as they develop tools or products, ensuring that we are informed of AI developments relevant to psychology and encouraging the incorporation of the best principles of psychology in their products.
- Engagement Channels and Offerings: Collaboration with the BOT Communications and Marketing Committee, and the ABPP Ethics Consultation Committee yields practical channels for AI engagement. These include:
- AI Corner: This is a dedicated section in the ABPP publication, On Board with Professional Psychology, for updates to ABPP specialists. Current efforts focus on updates such as this one, as well as upcoming spotlight features of our specialists working with AI, their experiences, and words of wisdom.
- AI Reading List: As mentioned above, the task force’s recommended reading list provides valuable insights into AI and offers considerations for integrating AI into professional activities.
- Articles: In the July 2024 ABPP publication, On Board with Professional Psychology, there were articles on Introducing the ABPP Artificial Intelligence Task Force and, in coordination with the ABPP Ethics Consultation Committee, an article on Ethical Considerations in the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Psychological Practice. Specialists also contributed unique pieces focused on the intersection of AI and professional psychology in the current and previous issues.
- Online Seminars/Webinars: An interactive webinar was rolled out, in partnership with The Trust, centered on relevant ethical and practical issues in psychological use of AI. This aired in November 2024, is available on demand at The Trust website: The Pros, Cons, and Ethical Considerations When Using Artificial Intelligence in Psychology Practice.
- Podcasts and Social Media: A podcast series is in the works to engage our community through interviews and talks with our own specialists and other experts in the AI field. These podcasts may be advertised via ABPP channels of Social Media.
- Inviting Your Participation: We welcome your help! If you are a Specialist working with AI and would like to be considered to be featured on a podcast, spotlighted in an upcoming AI Corner, and/or would like to talk with our Outreach and Consultation Subgroup to enhance or promote our collaboration with those that work within AI and psychology, please contact our ABPP AI Task Force Chair, Dr. Jeni McCutcheon, at jenimccutcheon@aol.com.
