- Maintenance of Certification (MOC)
For the past few years, ABPP has been developing a process by which board certified psychologists could assess and demonstrate their continuing competence. After considerable effort, including revisions to this process to facilitate specialists’ completion of the forms, the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process is underway.
ABPP certified psychologists who achieved certification before 1/1/2015 will not be required to participate in this process, although their participation is encouraged. Those who gained certification after 1/1/2015, however, will be required to participate in Maintenance of Certification (MOC) every 10 years.
Participating in MOC by opting in is not mandatory for any specialist who has been board certified prior to 1/1/2015. However, every specialist board certified before 1/1/2015 must decide by 1/1/2025 to opt in or opt out of MOC. You will not have your certification taken away if you choose to opt out.
You will be able to preview exactly what MOC is before you make the decision to opt in/opt out; there is no obligation to proceed simply because you viewed the form.
Finally, it is ABPP’s hope that all specialists will participate in MOC, as doing so supports ABPP in its role of setting and maintaining standards of competence and excellence, and sets a clear leadership example for future specialists. It is our sincere hope that your MOC experience is a positive, self-reflective experience.
Please note that MOC requirements of specialties may differ slightly; the specialist is advised to carefully review the requirements of the specialty for which he/she/they are submitting the MOC application.
