Presentation Summary:

The ongoing movement towards increased specialization in professional psychology intersects with movements towards quality assurance and evidence-based practice. In particular, rapid expansion in the field of clinical child and adolescent psychology has led to related advances in the science and practice in this specialty area. Board certification by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) remains the gold standard for demonstrating the highest level of specialty competence. In this workshop, we will first discuss the benefits of board certification for specialists across practice settings. We will then describe the three stages of the board certification process, highlighting the main tasks and objectives of each stage (i.e., credential review, practice samples, oral examination). Presenters will also highlight important considerations for those pursuing the regular versus senior pathway towards board certification and detail important resources and supports available to candidates. Attendees will also learn about the competency-based approach to board certification and will review the functional and foundational competencies relevant for specialization in clinical child and adolescent psychology. Finally, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about how to prepare to pursue board certification. By engaging in this process of selfassessment, self-reflection, and peer-reviewed demonstration of specialty competence, specialists in clinical child and adolescent psychology will be able to ensure that their specialty training is up to date and clearly communicating their specialty competence to the public.
