- Tell us about your current professional roles and activities.
I am the Director of Training for DC Superior Court’s Child Guidance Clinic, a juvenile forensic internship site in Washington, DC. I also maintain a private practice. I serve on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Forensic Psychology (ABFP) and the ABPP AI Task Force.
- What do you enjoy most about your job?
At the Clinic, I love being able to train the next generation of forensic psychologists in providing culturally-sensitive, evidence-based, and ethical forensic services. Supervision, mentorship, and teaching are bidirectional processes. My private practice allows me to take on unique, interesting cases across the East Coast.
- How do you utilize artificial intelligence in your professional activities?
I primarily use AI for research, data collection and summary, and presentation development. Unique considerations exist for AI use in forensic practice. AI could be used to find literature to support forensic opinions, summarize lengthy court documents, or review evidence files. There are also concerns about AI meeting admissibility criteria for use in court, whether AI should make decisions like risk assessment, and AI’s potential for perpetuating biases in the justice system.
- What inspired you to get board certified in Forensic Psychology?
Board certification is an unparalleled opportunity for growth, learning, and improvement as a practitioner. The forensic certification process is quite rigorous, and I wanted to rise to the challenge.
- How has board certification contributed to your professional activities?
The certification process itself made me a more knowledgeable, skilled, and quality practitioner. Continued affiliation with ABFP helps me to continuously refine and sharpen my skills. It also opened doors for me in terms of work opportunities, professional visibility, and connecting with the best practitioners in the field.
- What advice would you give to psychologists or trainees interested in pursuing board certification?
Connect with a mentor who can guide you through the process. ABFP has a formal mentorship program that is a useful resource for candidates.
- What advice would you give to psychologists or trainees interested in integrating artificial intelligence into their professional activities?
The American Academy of Forensic Psychology (AAFP) has offered live and online workshops about AI in forensic psychology. APA has also published step-by-step guides and checklists for psychologists deciding whether to incorporate AI in their practice.
