Couple & Family

Happy family enjoying time in the woods

The American Board of Couple and Family Psychology (ABCFP) is a member board of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). An integral quality that sets couple and family psychology apart from other areas of the field is that CFP specialists view human behavior through a systemic lens; this includes explicit awareness of interactional feedback loops, context, culture, diversity, and developmental perspectives.

Couple and Family Psychology is the practice of working with multiple individuals within a relational unit to facilitate the wellness of both the individuals themselves as well as the health of the relational system that they co-create. In doing so, CFP specialists understand, assess, and treat psychological issues by focusing on a combination of affective, cognitive, behavioral, and dynamic factors that impact individuals, couples, families, and larger systems across the lifespan.

Board Certification in Couple and Family Psychology (CFP) is the gold standard for professional practice in the realm of relationship therapy. It represents a dedication to the highest standards of competence, ultimately ensuring optimal care and positive outcomes for individuals, couples, families, and the communities they are a part of. Our specialization welcomes both couple and family psychotherapy practitioners as well as all psychologists who apply a systemic orientation to their professional work (e.g., individual psychotherapy, teaching, supervision, consultation, research, administration, workforce development, forensic assessments, policy development and advocacy). Please refer to the FAQ section for further information, and please reach out us today to learn more about obtaining CFP board certification.

The ABCFP works in close collaboration with the American Academy of Couple & Family Psychology and Division 43 in support of ongoing efforts to advance our specialty area and the couples and families we serve.
