April 2025
To Our Esteemed Specialists,
In these challenging and ever-evolving times, the American Board of Counseling Psychology (ABCoP) reaffirms our unwavering commitment to you—our specialists—and to the core values that define our profession. As we navigate the complexities of the current sociopolitical climate, we recognize the profound impact these dynamics have on the individuals and communities we serve, as well as on our own professional and personal lives.
Counseling psychology has long been rooted in principles of social justice, advocacy, and the promotion of human well-being. These values compel us to stand firm in our dedication to fostering inclusive, affirming, and equitable spaces, both within our profession and in the broader society. We remain steadfast in upholding ethical and evidence-based practices that empower individuals and communities, particularly those historically marginalized and disproportionately affected by sociopolitical unrest.
We acknowledge that the current climate presents significant challenges—ranging from threats to mental health care access and equity, to the distress caused by systemic injustices, attacks on diversity and science, divisive rhetoric, and threats to our civil liberties.
In response, ABCoP is committed to:
- Supporting Our Specialists: We recognize the emotional and psychological toll that current events may have on you as professionals. ABCoP will continue to share resources, guidance, and professional development opportunities to support your well-being and professional resilience.
- Advocating for Justice and Equity: We will continue to elevate the voices of counseling psychologists in advocacy efforts that promote mental health equity, ethical care, and policies that uphold human dignity and justice.
- Strengthening Our Community: In these times, solidarity and connection are more important than ever. We encourage engagement in dialogue, mentorship, and peer support to foster a community of care and shared strength.
As a board, we are steadfast in our mission to advance the field of counseling psychology while honoring the diversity, dignity, and resilience of all individuals. We stand with you in your efforts to uphold these principles in your work, your communities, and your personal lives. Together, we remain committed to the transformative power of counseling psychology in fostering healing, justice, and societal well-being.
In solidarity,
