Welcome current and future specialists to the website of the American Board of Clinical Psychology (ABCP).
ABCP has been providing board certification in clinical psychology for over seventy-five years. We are a member specialty board of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), and it is our responsibility to establish the criteria related to the definition, education, training, competencies, and the examination leading to certification as a specialist in clinical psychology. Board certification assures that the clinical specialist has successfully completed the education, training, and experience requirements of the specialty, including a peer-reviewed, performance-based examination designed to assess the competencies required to provide quality services in clinical psychology. Specialty certification reflects an advanced level of competence beyond that required for state licensure. The Academy of the American Board of Clinical Psychology provides outreach to future specialists and continuing education webinars for current specialists. Additionally, we offer recognition, awards, and scholarships. We recognize Senior Examiners who have demonstrated dedicated service to ABCP as a board certification examiner. Senior Examiner status is a distinction bestowed in recognition of service and dedication in providing board certification examinations in clinical psychology. Additionally, we provide a Distinguished Examiner Award to Senior Examiners who have demonstrated exceptional performance as examiners. Distinguished Examiner status is an honor bestowed in recognition of outstanding professionalism, service, and commitment in providing board certification examinations in clinical psychology. For early career psychologists, we have developed the ECP Advocacy Award to recognize ECPs who are board certified in clinical psychology and whose advocacy has had a positive impact on policy, law, public reform, communities, and/or institutional change.. For students, we offer Doctoral Student Scholarships to support doctoral students in APA- or CPA-accredited doctoral programs in clinical psychology who intend to pursue board certification following their training and licensure.
