- Welcome Letter from the Specialty Board President

Susan Krauss Whitbourne, PhD, ABPP
Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the American Board of Geropsychology (ABGERO). Given the aging population, there is a growing need for psychologists qualified to serve this diverse and expanding community. ABGERO is a relatively new but rapidly growing specialty board of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). Our goal is to recognize, certify, and promote expertise in geropsychology by evaluating professionals who provide assessment, intervention, and consultation services for older adults. Psychologists board-certified in geropsychology are recognized as having demonstrated competence and expertise in this specialized field.
The examination process for board certification in geropsychology consists of three key components designed to assess foundational and functional competencies: credential review, submission and evaluation of a practice sample, and an oral examination. In the past, oral examinations were conducted at psychology and aging annual conventions; however, we have transitioned to virtual examinations for greater convenience and cost savings. These are conducted on an ongoing basis whenever there are three qualifying applicants.
ABGERO is committed to ensuring that the examination process is fair and reasonable and that all applicants and candidates are treated with courtesy and respect. We value diversity in all its forms and place a strong emphasis on inclusivity throughout the certification process. Our goal is to support qualified professionals in achieving board certification in geropsychology. To assist candidates, we offer a robust mentoring program and scholarships, and we strongly encourage applicants to take advantage of these resources. For those who need additional supervision to meet eligibility requirements, we are developing formal supervision groups to help fulfill the need for further supervised hours.
For detailed information, we encourage interested colleagues to explore the relevant sections of our website, including the document library, specialty-specific requirements, examination process, and frequently asked questions. Additionally, board members and I are available to answer questions about certification requirements or the application process. We also encourage students and trainees to consider specializing in this field early in their careers, and we are happy to provide guidance on the education and training needed to help them eventually become board-certified in geropsychology.
I am honored to serve as President of this dedicated group of professional psychologists. Please contact me or any member of the ABGERO Board if we can provide assistance or support as you consider board certification in geropsychology.
